WHAT IS A QUILT?

Quilting is a slow craft that acts as a meditative process. It slows down productivity and time while creating intentionally. Under a capitalist structure, quilts hold a relational form of resistance. Quilts can act as a salve for those in need.

Quilts hold and tell narratives; a collection of events and experiences, while continuing to create stories. They are about relationships, and comfort. They are warm, calming and help to ease the heaviness while simultaneously providing physical weight that helps to soothe. Blankets have a symbiotic connection with the user; they hold you while they are being held. Quilts are about fostering care and building community and connections.

Art and craft are often juxtaposed, this dynamic is created through systems of elitism and misogyny. There is value in home making and importance in everyday, practical items. These items carry and create story.

QUILT CARE

The life of an object is to change, to grow and change, and stay the same. Quilts are to be used and loved. Overtime natural dye will transform. I naturally dye recycled fabric to make quilts. Natural dye last longest by keeping your quilt out of direct sunlight and being gentle when washing. Ideally, wash with cold water and soap in your bathtub. Hang to dry. Alternatively, use the delicate setting on the washer, and hang dry. Wash sparingly..

NATURAL DYE

I’m interested in seasons and cycles and the relationship between dyeing and dying. What are their commonalities? What does the process, steps, care and preparation, as well as the openness to possibilities and outcomes teach me about living and dyeing/dying?

I’m very interested in making quilts to support death, transition, and grief. Quilts as a form of therapy and healing.
